LOCAL AUTHOR TO LEAD INTRODUCTION TO FICTION WORKSHOP AT EAST BANK REGIONAL LIBRARY

JEFFERSON, LAVicki Salloum, a local author who has written four novels and numerous short stories, will lead an introduction to fiction writing workshop on Thursday afternoons at the East Bank Regional Library, 4747 W. Napoleon Ave., Metairie. 

This event geared for beginning writers, and not for experienced fiction writers. Participants must register on the library’s website. This event is free of charge.

The workshop is designed to instill a love of creative writing and an understanding of the techniques used in creating great fiction. It aims to strengthen the beginning writer’s powers of imagination and ability to think critically.

The workshop will:

  • Introduce students to essential elements of storytelling as characterization, plot/conflict/moral choice, points of view, significant detail, theme, scene-setting/dialog/atmosphere, and style/tone/voice.
  • Acquaint students with the writing philosophies and practices of not only the great masters, but successful contemporary novelists.
  • Assign creative work for critique by classmates.

There are 12 workshops. They will occur at 1 p.m. on the following days'.

Born in Gulfport, Vicki Salloum has lived in New Orleans for many years. Her four novels are: Waiting for You at Midnight (2018), Candyland (2016), Faulkner & Friends (2014), and A Prayer to St. Jude (2012). She has been a volunteer instructor in the New Orleans People Program and the New Orleans Lifelong Learning Program.
