JEFFERSON PARISH SCORES “A” IN FINAL 2022 WATER SYSTEM GRADES

JEFFERSON, LA – According to the Louisiana Department of Health, East Jefferson Water Works District 1 and West Jefferson Water Works District 2 scored an “A” in the final 2022 Water System Grades.

“Shortly after Hurricane Ida left devastating infrastructure damage, LDH issued a preliminary "D" grade for our water system. Since that time, our water department has worked diligently on the cited deficiencies and we are proud to announce our final grade received from LDH of an "A" for both the Eastbank and Westbank of Jefferson Parish,” said Parish President Cynthia Lee Sheng. “Securing our critical water infrastructure for the next decades has been a top priority for us. We were successful in doing so with moderate rate increases and many of those massive infrastructure improvements are already underway, including pipe replacement, water tower rehabilitation, water treatment plant upgrades, advanced water meter infrastructure, and the construction of an emergency backup water source for Grand Isle. The projects will be completed in phases over the upcoming years and will provide our citizens a modern water system.”

The Louisiana Department of Health released the final water grades for 951 community water systems across the state, a process that creates accountability for water systems and provides transparency for water system customers. The water grades are enabled under Act 98 of the 2021 Regular Session of the Louisiana Legislature, and is known as the Community Drinking Water Accountability Rule. The grades are calculated using points assigned to seven standards that evaluate the infrastructure, sustainability and overall water quality.
