JEFFERSON PARISH PREPARES FOR SEVERE WEATHER

JEFFERSON, LA – According to the National Weather Service, Jefferson Parish is under a “Marginal Risk” to a “Slight Risk” of severe weather late Friday night and an “Enhanced Risk” of severe weather on Saturday morning, clearing up on Saturday afternoon to evening. The weather pattern is expected to bring heavy rain with the potential of coastal flooding, damaging winds, thunderstorms, hail and isolated tornadoes.

Some of the initial heavy rain development is expected to start after midnight on Friday across portions of south Mississippi into southeast Louisiana, remaining areas west of I-55. Average rainfall amounts of 1 to 2 inches are expected. The rain could cause street flooding in low lying areas and areas of poor drainage.

The Public Works department has been cleaning catch basins and drain lines throughout the day. All pump stations will be manned throughout the duration of the event. Currently, the system pumping capacity is at 99.7 percent with two of the 190 pumps out of service for maintenance. Directors with the Emergency Operations Center have been in constant contact with the National Weather Service who will provide updates as the storm system moves in. Jefferson Parish Drainage Pump Stations staff and Public Works crews are available for this anticipated weather.

Citizens are asked to help reduce the chance of street flooding by clearing debris from their streets and drains around their property; such debris impedes water flow into the drainage system. Also retrieve garbage cans and store them properly after their pick up date and take any other precautions to protect their property.

Parish Ordinance Section 36-188 prohibits motorists from traveling on flooded streets, which may increase the possibility of structural flooding due to wake action caused by moving vehicles.
