JEFFERSON PARISH, LOUISIANA

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

JEFFERSON PARISH PARTNERS WITH STATE FIRE MARSHAL ON OPERATION SAVE-A-LIFE SMOKE ALARM PROGRAM

JEFFERSON, LA – Jefferson Parish will install free smoke detectors for residents through the Louisiana Office of State Fire Marshal’s Operation Save-A-Life program.

Operation Save-A-Life was created to combat the rise in fire-related injuries and deaths due to home fires by providing smoke alarms to vulnerable citizens and at-risk communities with the help of local fire departments.

Please call your local Jefferson Parish fire station (click here for a list of stations) to get on the schedule for installation. If your local fire station is not on this list, installation will be coordinated through the Louisiana Office of State Fire Marshal. Please contact their office at 225-925-4911 ext. 224 to get on the schedule.

As frigid temperatures continue throughout the region, the Louisiana Office of State Fire Marshal recommends the following safe-heating tips:

  • Place space heaters 3-5 feet from combustible objects like blankets and curtains
  • Plug all heating appliances directly into wall outlets, not power strips or extension cords
  • Do not use stoves or ovens to heat homes
  • Don’t overfill fireplaces/wood burning stoves
  • Do not leave candles/open flames (or space heaters) left unattended
  • Have working smoke alarms in your home

Additionally, carbon monoxide can also be a hazard when it comes to heating homes. Carbon monoxide, often referred to as “the invisible killer,” is an odorless, colorless gas created when fuels like gasoline, wood, coal, natural gas, propane, oil and methane are actively burning. In the home, heating and cooking equipment that burn fuel can be sources of carbon monoxide. In addition to smoke detectors, carbon monoxide alarms are also recommended for all homes.
