JEFFERSON PARISH MONITORING TROPICAL STORM LAURA AND TROPICAL DEPRESSION 14
Residents Encouraged to Prepare for Possible Heavy Rain

JEFFERSON, LA – Tropical Storm Laura and Tropical Depression #14 could both bring impacts to Jefferson Parish during the Monday through Thursday timeframe next week. The Jefferson Parish Administration, along with the Emergency Management and Public Works Departments, are closely monitoring and are ready to respond accordingly.

Parish President Cynthia Lee Sheng signed an emergency declaration effective at 4:30pm on Friday, August 21, 2020. To view it click here.

Currently, impacts for Jefferson Parish include the potential of heavy rainfall. Strong winds and elevated tides could also affect portions of the area depending on the eventual tracks and intensities of the two systems. There is a higher than normal uncertainly in specific impacts and it is important to continue monitoring the latest forecasts for any changes in expected impacts.

Residents are encouraged to prepare by clearing leaves and debris from gutters, downspouts and in front of catch basins to help rain get to the drain. It is also encouraged that all residents place their garbage and recycling bins curbside on their scheduled collection days in anticipation of heavy rain over the weekend. If heavy rain occurs, residents should remove all bins from the curb and secure them on their property to avoid debris clogging storm drains and the loss of bins if street flooding occurs.

Residents should continue to monitor the news for weather updates and follow guidance from local officials in the coming days. Residents are also reminded about the JPALERT System for real-time updates. Residents can text either JPALERT or JPNOTICIAS to 888-777 to stay informed.

A list of tropical weather supplies, evacuation details and other critical information can be found on www.getagameplan.org website or on the Jefferson Parish Emergency Management page.
