FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

JEFFERSON PARISH GOVERNMENT RESPONDS TO HURRICANE ZETA
All Jefferson Parish Government Buildings Closed on Thursday, October 29, 2020

JEFFERSON, LA –The Jefferson Parish Administration, along with the Emergency Management and Public Works Departments, continue to closely monitor Hurricane Zeta and are responding accordingly. The following are updates as of Wednesday, October 28, 2020 at 7 p.m.:

Post-Storm Notice to the Public:

The public is urged to not be on the streets tonight, as there are multiple downed power lines and debris throughout the parish. Jefferson Parish officials will assess damages and keep the public informed when it is safe to go out.

Due to widespread power outages throughout Jefferson Parish (approximately 75 percent of the parish), which has put a strain on the process of powering the sewerage systems, Jefferson Parish residents are asked to limit all non-essential sewer services as much as possible during this time - this includes washing clothes, cleaning dishes and showering. Residents can continue using their essential sewer services, such as using the bathroom.

Government Closures:

All Jefferson Parish buildings will close on Thursday, October 29, 2020 due to Hurricane Zeta. This includes the Joseph S. Yenni Building, the General Government Building, Jefferson Parish Credit Union, Jefferson Parish libraries and all Jefferson Parish Parks and Recreation activities. The Bonnabel Boat launch, Bucktown Harbor Marina and Lafreniere Park will also be closed.

Garbage and Recycling Collection:

Curbside garbage and recycling collection is scheduled to take place on Thursday, October 29, 2020; however, residents should expect delays due to possible downed power lines and trees as a result of Hurricane Zeta. Waste Connections will make every effort to remedy all weather-related misses in a timely manner. Residents need to be aware of the fact that while their streets may be clear, access to their neighborhoods may not and this will impact collection.

Jefferson Transit Service:

Jefferson Transit service will be restored on Thursday, October 29, 2020 as soon as the route has been checked and determined to be safe. Jefferson Transit continues to monitor the weather and will update the public on further service changes as they happen. Please stay tuned at www.jeffersontransit.org for updates on service changes.

COVID-19 Testing:

The Alario Center drive-thru COVID-19 testing site is closed on Thursday, October 29, 2020. Scheduled mobile testing in Lafitte for Thursday, October 29, 2020 is also canceled.
