FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

JEFFERSON PARISH GOVERNMENT BUILDINGS CLOSED ON AUGUST 26 DUE TO HURRICANE LAURA

Garbage/Recycling Collection and Transit Service to take place as scheduled, as long as weather permits

JEFFERSON, LA – Jefferson Parish President Cynthia Lee Sheng has announced all parish buildings will close on Wednesday, August 26 due to Hurricane Laura. This includes the Joseph S. Yenni Building, the General Government Building, Jefferson Parish Credit Union, Jefferson Parish libraries and all Jefferson Parish Parks and Recreation activities. The Bonnabel Boat launch, Bucktown Harbor Marina and Lafreniere Park will also be closed in preparation for the impending weather.

According to Parish President Lee Sheng, “Although Hurricane Laura’s projected landfall is near the TX/LA border, the forecast is still expected to be a major hurricane and the safety of our citizens is a top priority. Even though Jefferson Parish is outside the cone, we expect impacts away from the center due to outer rain bands. Our major concern is storm surge and coastal flooding for Lower Jefferson. We are being advised that there is still a risk for flash flooding for low-lying areas due to heavy rainfall, as well as the risk for tornadoes in the outer bands. Our Jefferson Parish Emergency Operations Center remains fully activated and ready to respond. Citizens should remain on guard and be prepared for tropical impacts.”

In order to get as much off the street as possible while weather permits, regularly-scheduled garbage and recycling collection for unincorporated Jefferson Parish and the Town of Jean Lafitte will occur on Wednesday, Aug. 26.Residents should not place bulky material at the curb for collection, as this poses a safety hazard. In areas that experience street flooding, residents are advised to bring their cans in from the curb, and store them in a safe location. Should collection be delayed or postponed due to inclement weather, a reasonable effort will be made to pick up on the customer’s next scheduled collection day. Any additional changes and updates to curbside collection during the approach of Hurricane Laura will be announced on www.JeffParish.net.

Jefferson Transit will run its normal Tuesday and Wednesday service, as long weather permits. To stay updated on additional changes in service and routes, visit https://jeffersontransit.org/.
