HOLIDAY LIGHT RECYCLING PROGRAM TO BEGIN IN JEFFERSON PARISH

Jefferson, LA – The Jefferson Parish Department of Environmental Affairs, a Keep America/Keep Louisiana Beautiful Affiliate, in partnership with Waste Connections, Inc., will begin recycling holiday light strands at two Jefferson Parish trash/recycling drop sites beginning, Monday, January 13th, 2020. This recycling program will be accessible throughout the year.

Residents may bring their old, broken or burned out holiday lights strands to 400 David Drive, Metairie, or 6440 Lapalco, Marrero, and place into a special bin for recycling. Light bulbs may be left on strands and rope lights will also be accepted. Residents must remove all packaging, styrofoam and plastic bags before placing strands in the designated containers at the drop-off sites.

Residents are reminded that holiday light strands should not be placed in their curbside bins for collection in front of their home. While light strands are recyclable, recycling facilities operate with machines designed to separate bottles from boxes, paper from plastic and so on. When items such as grocery bags, holiday lights or garden hoses are thrown into the mix, it slows down the process or stops it by jamming the sorting machinery.

The Department of Environmental Affairs is constantly seeking ways to divert waste from the landfill and build upon on their overall recycling efforts.
